CONTINUING OUR E-STORY

We have liked to write a story all together because it has been very fun and interesting. First, we read the story, then we played the quiz for the comprehension and finally we continued the story that our partners from other schools had written. It was very motivating for us to follow the story because we should connect our ideas with the previous parts. Now we are waiting anxiously for the end of the story.

JOSEP GRAS PRIMARY SCHOOL'S MEETINGS

Our online meetings with Italy and France were amazing!

Before doing the online meetings, students were nervous, and some of them felt shy. In spite of that, they were very excited because they saw their penpals and the other partners from the project.

Students from Josep Gras Primary School liked the online meetings a lot and they are asking when we are going to do more!

Commenting on Survey Results

  • Commenting on Survey Results

  • Students answered the questions on the survey. Then, we had an online meeting with the teachers of partner schools to discuss the results of the survey.

  • After that, we shared our opinions about the results and precautions or activities planned to overcome revealed difficulties via the results !

Sevda DURMAZ - Tokat International Project İmam Hatip Secondary School

I applied the questionnaire to my students in the project. I concluded that speaking and listening to someone in a different language context looked like the essential problem. On the base of teaching and learning English in Turkey, we are teaching grammar mostly and unfortunately we do not have enough input exposed to students. Therefore, we will do our best and keep practicing in our lesson and in this platform obviously. I am pllanning to make my students feel brave and confident as communicating with someone English.

Maria Istituto Comprensivo di Lurate Caccivio Vittorio Alfieri Secondary School

I spoke with my students about the issues of the quiestionnaire and they were enthusiastic about the concept of learning a foreign language. The big problem we have in learning a foreign language is that there are not a lot of opportunities to speak it, we spend a lot of time in grammar and written exercises than in oral practice, it depends on time, schedule and so on. What I can do is to encourage students to not be afraid to learn and take advantage of any opportunities they have

Marie-Ange Marmillon, collège les coudriers, France

This survey shows what we sort of already know and face everyday when teaching. Speaking in a foreign language is a real challenge especially when our language doesn't have the same roots as the foreign language. On top of that, we have to take inot account the age of the students as when they are teenagers they are more self aware and find it more difficult to express themselves in front of others.
My students were on holidays but those who got my message about the survey did it willingly and were proud to be part of the survey!

    Joana-Vilnius Simonas Konarskis Gymnasium

After answering the survey questions, we had a short discussion with my students what are the biggest challenges they face when learning a foreign language. Most of them said that it is speaking as they are afraid to make mistakes and not to be understood, also they say that when they need to say something the words seem to vanish from their memory. All of this I think is a problem we as teachers face, since there is not enough time to do the speaking and the teaching materials usually focus on grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening. I truly hope that while cooperating with students from different countries, our students will become more confident and will understand that communication is not that hard thus very important.

    Esra Kablan-Nail Reşit Secondary School

According to the survey results, students hesitate to speak English because they either think they look funny or feel afraid of making mistakes. To overcome this, students need to learn in a stress free classroom atmosphere. They need to be assured that it is allright to make mistakes. It’s a natural outcome of learning. We’ve also made sure with the students that nobody is to be laughed at because of the way she/he speaks or pronouns the words. Respect is the key word for this to be achieved. Finally, students will be provided with opportunites where they can practise English like e-twinning projects. Drama is to be included more in learning process so that it enables real life situations for genuine conversation.

Silvia Boladeres, Josep Gras Primary School (Sant Llorenç Savall, Barcelona, Spain)

I talked with my students about the results and they all agree that the most difficult part for them is speaking in English, they feel ashamed, hesitate, don't know how to start, afraid of making mistakes... And I don't have too much time of English lessons and I have a lot of contents. Now I'm starting to put into practice CLIL and it's very interesting because English is the language, so speaking and listening become very important. And now, my students are creating posters with sentences and questions that they could use so it may be helpful having them in sight. Another idea: students have to listen to a story as many times as they need until they feel comfortable to record themselves retelling it, maybe this activity helps to improve their pronunciation and to be less afraid of making mistakes.
